Service Description
Are you a junior or a senior getting ready to write your college essay? Do you need help? This course is designed to help you explore college essays that have been successful in the past, to examine what colleges need to know about you from your essay, and to help you write an essay that establishes the authentic you as an applicant to college. This is not a class where the teacher will write your essay! Rather, it will be an exploration of what you are interested in studying, what experiences you have that are relevant, and not on your resume, the crucial steps of thesis-writing and outlining, and effective conclusions, that will demonstrate (if you are) that you are ready for and capable of college work. There will be 4 sessions at 1 ½ hours each at The Hive, with homework assignments between classes. At the end of the 4 sessions, well before the deadline for Early Decision applications of November 1, and months before the traditional Dec. 31 deadline for regular college admissions essays, if your student does the work diligently, they will have a polished essay that reflects who they are for one of the Common Application questions this year. Besides research, analysis of successful essays, direct instruction, and practice writing, the class will also afford, because of its small size, peer editing and discussion, and personal conferencing with the instructor.
